Building Inspector School with Program Overviews
Building inspectors examine structures, such as buildings, bridges, highways and sewer systems, to make sure they meet building codes and standards set forth by the International Code Council (ICC). Building inspectors usually have an area of specialization, so students should make sure the concentration they want to pursue is highlighted in the training program of their choice.
How to Select a Building Inspection School
Building inspection is usually offered as a certificate program, although better employment opportunities may be available for graduates who hold an associate's degree. Building inspection students learn about topics such as building codes, plans, construction materials, computers, mathematics and communications. Most degrees in building inspection are granted by community and junior colleges.
Some building inspectors specialize in areas such as reinforced concrete or structural steel. Students who plan to specialize should make sure the area they want to concentrate in is featured within their chosen program.
Additionally, many employers seek applicants with training in combination building inspection, so students should look for programs that offer such training. Combination building inspectors perform an array of duties that include residential, commercial and industrial inspection.
