Cabinet Making Schools and Colleges with Program Information
Cabinet makers build items such as furniture and cabinets out of wood and other materials. Although not a requirement for the career, a college-level program in cabinet making can provide the skills needed for this job. These vocational programs are mostly found at 2-year colleges.
How to Choose a Cabinet Making School or College
Cabinet making programs can be found at community and technical colleges accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Certificate, diploma and associate degree programs prepare graduates for a variety of carpentry, woodworking and cabinet making positions. Students should look for programs with good facilities providing plenty of hands-on experience.
Exact coursework varies from one school to the other, but certificate and diploma programs generally provide few courses other than those pertaining to the vocation. Associate degree programs, on the other hand, include general education coursework that can be transferred to a four-year college or university. For this reason, students wanting to gain the necessary skills to start work right away might want to look for a shorter program leading to a one-year certificate; those wanting to further their education could enroll in a two-year associate degree program.
Cabinet Making Program Overviews
Certificate or Diploma in Cabinet Making
A certificate or diploma program in cabinet making typically requires a year of full-time study to complete. Students acquire the basic skills needed to pursue a career in the field, such as cabinetry math, layout, design, finishing and safety practices. Some schools also offer certificates in advanced carpentry and cabinetry for students who have some prior knowledge of the field.
In labs, students learn how to use power tools properly, how to shape and cut wood, how to use adhesives, screws and staples to put parts of a cabinet together and how to work with materials other than wood, such as fiberglass or plastic. A high school diploma or the equivalent is required to begin a certificate program.
Associate of Science in Cabinet Making
Associate degree programs in cabinet making, building construction or carpentry involve two years of full-time study. Some associate degree programs are designed for students that want to pursue education in construction management or further technical training at the bachelor's degree level. Such programs are designed to transfer the student easily into Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs in construction management or similar majors.
Some of the courses taught in an associate's degree program include custom cabinetry design, advanced detailing, mill cabinet tooling, cabinet construction and hand and power tool applications. General education coursework includes math, science and the humanities. A high school diploma or the equivalent is required to be admitted.
