Cable Repair Training Programs and Requirements
Most employers do not require formal training for individuals interested in working as cable repair technicians. However, local colleges often have undergraduate training programs in electronics or telecommunications, employer-preferred backgrounds for aspiring cable repair technicians.
Training Requirements and Recommendations
Cable repair technicians are not required to have any formal training, and a high school diploma or GED is usually the minimum educational requirement needed for consideration. Most cable repair technicians learn skills on the job. Individuals interested in becoming cable repair technicians should be able to lift 50-80 pounds, be able to work at heights of approximately 25 feet and be able to distinguish colors.
While not necessary, some employers may prefer individuals with a basic understanding of cable systems and electronics. Certificate programs generally require a year of training and offer a foundation for a career in cable servicing; related associate degree programs are also available, but are not typically needed.
Certificate in Electronics
Individuals interested in cable repair may decide to pursue this type of certificate to learn to troubleshoot electronic malfunctions. They gain foundations in digital and analog circuitry as well as alternating and direct currents. Electronic students also study computer systems and microprocessors.
Certificate in Telecommunications
Those who pursue a telecommunications certificate learn basics of working with electronics. They also study fiber optics and computer networking essentials. Hands-on training covering the installation and repair of broadband, wireless and cable telephone technologies are common.
While some cable companies may prefer to hire someone with a few years of experience, many cable repair positions are entry-level. Apprenticeships are one of the most common ways to gain experience in the cable servicing industry. These programs often last 3-5 years and are a way for inexperienced individuals to gain a real world education and earn a paycheck. Cable repair apprentices work alongside experienced technicians and perform basic tasks; they also complete classroom training. When they have completed their training, they earn the title Journeyman Line Worker.
Licenses and Certifications
While there are no license requirements for cable repair technicians, there are voluntary certifications. The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (www.scte.org) is an organization that offers such certifications as Broadband Premises Technician and Broadband Premises Expert. In order to qualify for certification, interested individuals must pass a qualifying exam. Certifications are valid for three years, during which time certified technicians must meet continuing education requirements or retest in order to maintain their credentials.
Workshops and Seminars
At times, employers or industry organizations may sponsor continuing education seminars and workshops. Events can last from a couple of hours to 1-3 days. Cable repair topics can range from safety procedures to system-specific troubleshooting techniques.
