However, there are only six Ohio community colleges offering culinary or pastry arts programs that include instruction specifically in cake decorating. These schools often require students to complete core courses in business and hospitality as part of the curriculum. Hands-on work experience is another common component.

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College

Located in Cincinnati, this institution offers a pastry arts associate's degree program through its Midwest Culinary Institute. The curriculum not only covers cake design, production, decorating and finishing techniques, but also includes core business and management classes. To help students get hands-on experience and find jobs after graduation, the Midwest Culinary Institute also runs an educational co-op. Students are required to complete eight to ten credit hours of work experience in this program before graduating.

The Midwest Culinary Institute also offers training in cake decorating through its Creations cooking classes. Students can take classes in basic pastry decoration or sign up for more advanced topics. Classes are offered to all ages and skill levels and run about three hours.

Columbus State Community College

With an annual enrollment of about 31,000 students, Columbus State Community College in Columbus offers a restaurant and foodservice management associate's degree through its hospitality management program. Students who choose the baking and pastry arts track can hone their culinary skills while learning how to successfully manage a kitchen. Students are required to complete 72 total credit hours. The curriculum includes classes in business ethics and nutrition management. Students also learn how to create frostings, fillings and decorations for cakes and other specialty desserts.

Additionally, Columbus State Community College offers students the option of pursuing a 17-credit-hour baking certificate. Coursework covers topics including sanitation basics, breads and pastries.

Cuyahoga Community College, located in Cleveland, awards a professional baking certificate to students who complete 32 hours of coursework. The curriculum covers advanced pastry decorating techniques and requires hands-on work experience. Students also learn the time management, customer service and purchasing skills needed to run a business in the baking industry. Those who complete this program can apply their course credits towards the school's culinary arts associate's degree program.

Hocking College

Located in Nelsonville, Hocking College offers a culinary arts associate's degree with a major in baking. Course requirements focus on developing students' business planning and baking skills and include topics in cake production and confections. In addition to completing coursework, students must work at one of two on-campus restaurants, Starbrick Bistro or Rhapsody, to fulfill graduation requirements.

Owens Community College

Owens Community College has two main campus locations in Findlay and Perrysburg Township, though its culinary arts classes are available at the Toledo campus. This 2-year school offers an associate's degree in the culinary arts as well as two certificate programs: one in culinary arts and another in baking and pastry. Students pursuing the latter option can study cake decorating through a series of beginning, intermediate and advanced pastry-making courses. Program requirements also include general food preparation classes and cooperative work experience. Students get hands-on training at the school's restaurant as well.

Sinclair Community College

Nestled in Dayton, Sinclair Community College offers a culinary arts track through its hospitality management and tourism program. Classes are offered in pastry making as well as menu planning and purchasing. An advanced culinary skills class also covers dessert preparation. To complete program requirements, students must participate in a 4-credit-hour internship.

Those who aren't interested in a degree program can complete 17 total credit hours and earn a short-term bakery specialist certificate. Its cake production class covers decorating techniques, like airbrushing, icing and stenciling. Individual courses in pastry and cake decorating are also offered to students not interested in full- or part-time enrollment.
