Schools and Programs

There are more than 200 schools in California that offer advanced degrees. For instance, students in Southern California can earn doctoral degrees at the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA), and students farther north may choose to study at California State University - Fullerton. Individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area may also be interested in Ph.D. programs at the University of California - Berkeley. The largest of these schools, UCLA, offers graduate programs through 150 different departments, including 40 doctoral programs that are ranked in the top 10 of their field. Largest School Offering Ph.D. Programs in California

University of California - Los Angeles

One of the most well-known institutions in the University of California system, the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) ranks well both nationally and internationally. U.S. News & World Report placed UCLA second nationally among public universities and 25th overall in 2010. The university was also ranked the #2 public university in the world in 2010 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's annual academic ranking of world universities and 13th overall. Students at UCLA can earn degrees at the bachelor's, master's, professional and doctoral levels, as well as a variety of baccalaureate and graduate certificates. Schools offering Ph.D. programs include:

College of Letters and Science

The College of Letters and Science at UCLA encompasses several major divisions, including life sciences, humanities, social sciences and physical sciences. All divisions offer a wide variety of Ph.D. programs. A very small sampling of the doctoral degrees offered in the College of Letters and Science includes the Ph.D. in Psychology, Ph.D. in Art History, Ph.D. in Political Science and Ph.D. in Chemistry.

Professional Schools

In addition to such professional degrees as the J.D. from the School of Law and the MBA from the Anderson School of Management, several of the UCLA professional schools offer Ph.D. programs. For example, students can earn a Ph.D. in Architecture from the School of the Arts and Architecture, a Ph.D. in Information Studies from the School of Education and Information, a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the School of Public Affairs, a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science or a Ph.D. in Theater and Performance Studies from the School of Theater, Film and Television.

Health Sciences

UCLA also offers several doctoral programs in their Health Sciences divisions. Graduate student's options include, but are not limited to, a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences from the School of Public Health, a Ph.D. in Nursing from the School of Nursing, a Ph.D. in Biomedical Physics from the David Geffen School of Medicine or a Ph.D. in Oral Biology from the School of Dentistry.
