Among the largest in the state are the University of California - Los Angeles, California State University - Long Beach and the University of Southern California.

University of California - Los Angeles
The University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) offers 200 graduate degree programs through 11 professional schools and through the College of Letters and Science. UCLA is home to over 6,500 doctoral and professional students, based on 2009 enrollment. During the 2008-2009 academic year, the university conferred 760 doctoral and over 600 first professional degrees, including the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees. Some of the largest doctoral programs are biochemistry and molecular biology, computer science, law, education, engineering, medicine, economics and psychology. According to UCLA, the school is one of the top universities in the country for the number of doctoral degrees awarded every year (www.ucla.edu).

California State University - Long Beach
California State University - Long Beach (CSULB) is a comprehensive, urban university situated on 322 acres near the Pacific Ocean. CSULB was one of the first campuses of the California State University system to offer a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. This 3-year program, available through the college of education, prepares students for work in grade level school districts and community colleges.
CSULB also offers a joint Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering and Industrial Applied Mathematics with Claremont Graduate University. This interdisciplinary program allows students to combine an engineering specialty of their choice through CSULB's college of engineering with applied mathematics through Claremont's school of mathematical sciences to develop a customized research-based doctoral program.

University of Southern California in Los Angeles
Established in 1880 as the first private research university in the West, the University of Southern California (USC) is home to roughly 18,000 graduate and professional students. In 2009, the university awarded over 6,000 advanced degrees. Doctoral programs are available through the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and through 15 professional schools, which include architecture, business, journalism, cinematic arts, dentistry, medicine and more. This California school maintains more than 100 research centers and institutes with nearly $560 million in yearly research expenditures. USC has also been recognized as having one of the most diverse doctoral-level student populations in the country.
