About the Technical Institute of Camden County College
Once known as the adult division of Camden County Technical Schools, the Technical Institute of Camden County College was founded in 1969. The institute is located in Sicklerville, roughly 10 miles away from Camden County College's (CCC) main campus in Blackwood, NJ. As one of the biggest community colleges in New Jersey, CCC is a public school that served roughly 23,000 credit-seeking students in 2011. In addition to its Blackwood and Sicklerville locations, CCC has campuses in Camden and Cherry Hill.
Academics
The Technical Institute of Camden County College offers training programs in hospitality, cosmetology, automotive repair, construction technology, health services and wastewater treatment. Most of these programs include classroom instruction and hands-on experience. In addition, the school operates a cosmetology clinic that allows students to charge for services, like haircuts and manicures. Apprenticeship programs in electrical, HVAC, welding, carpentry and plumbing are also available that meet the guidelines set forth by the U.S. and New Jersey Departments of Labor.
Most class sessions are held in the evening 2-4 days a week; classes for medical and health services programs are offered during the day. Attendance is mandatory for all Technical Institute programs. Students won't receive a certificate of completion if they miss more than 5% of the required course hours.
Admissions
Most Technical Institute programs begin in the Fall, and registration is usually open prior to a program's start date. To confirm when a program begins, students may check the school's website or call CCC's Division of Continuing Education.
A few programs have no admission requirements aside from a completed registration form and a basic understanding of math and reading. Other programs require a high school diploma or its GED equivalent. For medical and health services programs, students need to meet special admission requirements, like a criminal background check or CPR certification. Requirements for apprenticeships include full-time employment with a participating business and registration with the U.S. and New Jersey Departments of Labor.
While specific information on the Technical Institute's student population isn't available, more females than males were enrolled in Camden County College programs as of 2011 (58% v. 41%). During this time, the average student age was 27, and about 75% of CCC's students were residents of Camden County.
Tuition & Financial Aid
The cost to attend the Technical Institute varies by program and ranges between $1,000 and $7,145; in-county and out-of-county residents pay the same rates. Tuition for each program includes lab fees, books and supplies. Students who cancel their registration at least five days before the first day of class receive a full refund.
Students are expected to pay in full when registering for programs, although a deferred payment plan is available. To help cover the cost of education, CCC students can request Sallie Mae loans through the school. Some students may qualify for government funding if they're unemployed or underemployed.
