Certification Programs in New Jersey with School Options
Certification programs can be completed at 2-year colleges, trade schools and graduate schools. New Jersey students can earn certifications for trades, teaching, health care and just about any occupation. Certification documents skills, knowledge and the ability to work in compliance with NJ state or federal standards.
What Certification Programs Are in New Jersey?
According to New Jersey's Office of the Secretary of Higher Education, there are 66 colleges and universities in the state, including Princeton and Rutgers, two well-known universities. Certification programs from New Jersey schools cover many subjects, and they may be corporate, product-specific or professional.
Corporate certification may be earned through taking seminars and workshops. These certifications are often internal, and are usually developed by the corporation. Examples of corporate certification include Six Sigma, QS-9000 and ISO9001.
Product-specific certification is more advanced, and programs often center on software or operating systems. A good example of this product-specific certification is Microsoft's certification programs. Microsoft certification earned in New Jersey is valid in other locations, but is not valid for products other than the ones covered by the certification.
The third category of certification is professional certification. This certification is issued by professional organizations or state agencies to individuals who meet specific skill assessments, can apply professional standards and have the expertise to protect the public. Examples of this certification are Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credentials.
Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey, has a drug and alcohol counseling certification program that meets all requirements of the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of New Jersey, Inc. (APCBNJ, Inc.). The college, which has a student population of 17,015, is in eastern New Jersey, near Hackensack and Hillsdale.
The College of New Jersey, located in Ewing, New Jersey, offers a number of certification programs for various education levels. Options include bilingual endorsement, English as a Second Language (ESL), adult nurse practitioner post-master's, learning disabilities consultant post-master's, principal/supervisor, substance awareness coordinator and reading specialist certification.
The Metropolitan Campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey, offers a Learning Disability Teacher Consultant (LDTC) certification program in conjunction with a master's degree program. Program prerequisites are a master's degree in learning disabilities and three years of teaching experience. The New Jersey Department of Education requires LDTC certification for consultants on the teams that evaluate children for learning disabilities.
