Certified Nursing Assistant Training Options in Connecticut

To become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) or nursing assistant in Connecticut, students must complete a training program that's a minimum of 100 hours in length. Before students can have direct contact with patients, they must finish 16 hours of study in communication and interpersonal skills, safety and emergency procedures, resident rights, resident independence and infection control. To earn certification, prospective CNAs must pass Connecticut's competency exam within two years of completing an approved training program.

More than 100 schools in the state offer sufficient training programs. The schools outlined below are among those with programs that are approved by Connecticut's Department of Public Health.

Capital Community College

Hartford's Capital Community College offers a part-time nurse aide course that's taught by registered nurses. This 127-hour program includes classroom lectures and lab skills instruction. Students also go to local skilled nursing facilities to gain clinical experience. Capital Community College's Career Development and Placement Center has an online employment database with which students can register. The center also offers career development resources.

Housatonic Community College

Bridgeport-based Housatonic Community College has a 120-hour Certified Nursing Assistant course that can be completed in three months. Students attend lectures totaling 48 hours as well as 36 hours of labs during the first six weeks of the program, followed by 36 hours of hands-on training in the second six weeks. The on-campus Career Services Center offers services like career planning, career guidance, resume development and job search assistance, in addition to helping students build their cover letter writing and interviewing skills.

Manchester Community College

Located in Manchester, this college offers a Certified Nurse Aide training program through its Continuing Education Division. This 120-hour course includes classroom learning and practical instruction. Students also get hands-on experience through clinical sessions held at area nursing facilities. Manchester Community College has a Career Services department that aids students by providing online job listings, job search workshops and resume writing assistance, among other services.

Middlesex Community College

Middletown's Middlesex Community College offers a Certified Nurse Aide training program through its Division of Continuing Education, which serves more than 1,600 non-credit students a year. The program includes 12 lectures. Students also develop their skills and gain clinical training through labs and clinical sessions. Current students and alumni of Middlesex Community College can take advantage of the school's Career Development & Counseling Center, which aids job-seekers in making career decisions and finding job opportunities.

Naugatuck Valley Community College

Naugatuck Valley Community College, located in Waterbury, prepares students for positions in hospitals, nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, rehab facilities, doctors' offices, hospice and home care through its nurse aide course. In addition to attending classroom discussions and lectures, students take part in simulation labs and go to clinical settings to get experience. According to the school's website, 88% of its students successfully complete this program. Students and alumni of Naugatuck Valley Community College can receive assistance through the school's Job Placement Center, which offers services like career planning, internship assistance, employer connections, job search assistance and workforce transition.

Northwestern Connecticut Community Technical College

Winsted-based Northwestern Connecticut Community Technical College has day and evening options available for its nurse aide program. The program consists of 124 hours. Along with attending lectures in the classroom, students get laboratory instruction and gain clinical experience at nursing facilities. Northwestern Connecticut Community Technical College's Center for Student Development provides career counseling to students.

Norwalk Community College

Norwalk Community College is located in Norwalk and has a Certified Nurse Aide course that is 108 hours long and takes place over the course of 12 weeks. Students attend 36 hours of classroom instruction and receive 72 hours' worth of hands-on training. This training takes place at hospitals in Norwalk, Greenwich and Stamford.

Quinebaug Valley Community College

Quinebaug Valley Community College, with locations in Danielson and Willimantic, has a 3-month-long Certified Nursing Assistant program. During the 120 hours of instruction, students attend classroom lectures and complete clinical training at health care facilities. Topics covered in this program include providing patient, resident and home care; assisting with daily living activities; dealing with death and dying; and assisting patients with dementia. Among the services offered by Quinebaug Valley Community College are career services such as resume development, interview skills and information on techniques for searching for jobs.

Three Rivers Community College

Located in Norwich, Three Rivers Community College's Certified Nurse Assistant training program is 120 hours long. Students learn to give nursing and personal care. Other topics in the program include care planning, communication, patient observation and ways to give emotional and physical support to patients. To help support adult learners and non-traditional learners, Three Rivers Community College has an adult learner network to provide information on returning to college or scholarship opportunities.

Tunxis Community College

Tunxis Community College in Farmington offers its Certified Nurse Aide program on days, evenings and Saturdays. The program is 12 weeks long and 100 hours. Clinical experiences take place at an area nursing home. A maximum of eight students is allowed in each clinical group, and spaces are given on a first come, first served basis. The school has an academic support center where students can get tutoring, take part in learning strategy workshops or learn to develop study skills.
