Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Programs in Texas

The state of Texas has a variety of school options for those seeking careers as CNAs. To become employed as a nursing assistant, also known as nursing aide, a postsecondary certificate or award must be held. Additionally, the individual will need to pass the state-sanctioned certification exam to become listed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry. For a number of these programs, prospective students must pass a background check and have an up-to-date immunization record. All of the following schools offer programs that prepare students to become CNAs in Texas.

Amarillo College

Located in Amarillo, this public 2-year school enrolls more than 11,000 undergraduate students annually. Amarillo's west campus offers an Integrated Basic Education Skills Training (I-BEST) CNA program. The program lasts 14 weeks and helps students prepare for work in the healthcare field and to carry out rudimentary nursing tasks, such as checking vital signs and providing personal care. At the end of the program, students receive a continuing education certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Providers Certification.

Blinn College

Blinn College is a 2-year school in Brenham. The CNA program includes classes to help students learn the technical and clinical skills needed to pass the state certification exam. The 104-hour program teaches students to effectively communicate with patients, control infections and perform their duties safely. A clinical experience is also included.

Central Texas College

Central Texas College's main campus is located in Killeen. The 2-year school has more than 100 other locations throughout the globe. The school offers a CNA training program through its continuing education division. The program includes 92 hours of courses made up of classroom time and clinical instruction, which takes place at a long-term care institution. Graduates of the program receive a Certificate of Completion and qualify to take the state exam.

Del Mar College

For more than 75 years, Del Mar College has been providing higher education opportunities for students in Corpus Christi. Additionally, the 2-year school instructs over 12,000 undergraduate students each year. The CNA training program prepares students for careers at mental health and long-term healthcare facilities. The program is made up of lecture and laboratory portions as well as a clinical practicum.

El Centro College

El Centro College is located in Dallas and is part of the Dallas County Community College District. This institution has three locations, including a downtown campus, the Bill J. Priest campus and the West Dallas campus. The school offers a CNA program made up of three courses: a 60-credit hour CNA lecture and laboratory class, a 40-hour course made up of clinical instruction and a CPR course for healthcare providers. Graduates are eligible to sit for the CNA written and skills exams and are listed on the Texas CNA Registry upon passing the exam.

Houston Community College

This community college is located in Houston and enrolls more international students than any other community college in the country. Its CNA certificate program teaches students the skills necessary to operate equipment and perform procedures necessary to care for patients. Students who complete the program are qualified to take the Texas CNA certification exam.

San Jacinto Community College

Pasadena's San Jacinto Community College offers more than 200 degree and certificate programs. The CNA program prepares students to work in hospitals, doctor's offices and long-term facilities. The program includes 24 hours of clinic time. As students graduate from the program, they qualify to sit for the state CNA exam.

St. Philip's College

St. Philip's College has eight locations, including its Martin Luther King campus in San Antonio. The 2-year school enrolls more than 10,000 students each year. St. Philip's offers a CNA program where students learn how to communicate with patients and safely provide nursing care. The 108-hour course helps students gain entry-level employment in the healthcare field through classroom instruction and clinical practice.

Tarrant County College District

Tarrant County College District in Fort Worth is the sixth-largest school among Texas' many colleges and universities. The nursing aide program offered at the school has been approved by the Texas Department of Health. This 90-hour course prepares students to take the required exam to become listed as a CNA on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry.

University of Texas at Arlington

Located in Arlington, this University of Texas campus is the second-largest school in the University of Texas system. This institution serves around 33,500 students each year and offers a 15-session CNA program. The program includes lectures at the Smart Hospital and clinical instruction at Arbrook Plaza. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the state exam.
