Houston Community College System is the largest collective 2-year college institution in Texas. It comprises six campuses throughout Houston and serves more than 48,000 students annually. Houston Community College offers traditional day courses, as well as weekend, evening and distance-education opportunities. Individuals interested in becoming COTAs can enroll in a certificate or associate's degree program.
The Certificate in Occupational Therapy Assistant program can be completed in one year and requires 47 academic credits. Students learn to provide occupational rehabilitative services in group and individual settings. Courses cover occupational therapy principles, therapeutic activities, intervention concepts, psychology, physiology and mental health assessment. After completing the program, students are eligible to sit for the certification exam offered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). With certification, occupational therapy assistants can obtain licensure from the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners.
Requiring 71 credits, the Associate of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy program provides students with a comprehensive general education curriculum by including courses in American government, anthropology, technical writing, natural science and history. Non-core courses required to complete the associate's degree program are not accredited by ACOTE, but the degree program is approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

2. Santa Ana College in California
Santa Ana College, located approximately 40 miles southeast of Los Angeles, is the fourth-oldest 2-year college in California. In addition to more than 24,000 traditional students, the college currently enrolls 21,000 non-credit students per year in a variety of continuing education programs. Courses are available in more than 300 subjects and allows students to enroll in day, evening, weekend and distance-learning options.
Santa Ana College offers an Associate of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant program that combines specialized therapy courses with a general education curriculum. The program requires at least 80 credits and teaches students how to provide effective therapeutic services to a range of patients with mental health, physical and professional conditions. Courses are offered in abnormal psychology, medical terminology, kinesiology, psychosocial function and life development processes.
Students also take general education courses in the humanities, sociology, composition, computer applications and English. The program allows students to complete occupational therapy fieldwork in the fourth semester of study. After completing the program, graduates can sit for NBCOT certification. Those who receive certification must apply for licensure from the State of California Board of Occupational Therapy before seeking employment.
