1 - Harrisburg Area Community College - Gettysburg
Harrisburg Area Community College - Gettysburg is the branch of the Harrisburg Area Community College system nearest to Chambersburg. Other campus locations include Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York; the school also hosts a virtual campus. The college offers approximately 142 academic programs. Courses in many of the programs can be taken at any campus, including Gettysburg, or online. In 2011-12, the college conferred 113 less-than-one-year certificates; phlebotomy was the most popular program. The school awarded 237 one-year (but less than two-year) certificates, roughly a third of which were in licensed practical nursing. Of the 2,020 associate's degrees conferred, 336 were in registered nursing, 239 were in general studies, while 217 were in business administration and management.
2 - Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania
Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in Shippensburg offers about 58 programs to its nearly 8,200 students. In 2011-12, Shippensburg conferred 1,408 bachelor's degrees. Elementary education, with 221 degrees, was the most popular major, followed by psychology, with 120 degrees, then criminal justice/safety studies, with 119 bachelor's degrees conferred. The university conferred 396 master's degrees, 207 of which were in an education discipline. The university issued 30 undergraduate certificates, and all of the 39 postgraduate certificates awarded were in geography. 3 - Gettysburg College
Gettysburg College offers around 51 academic programs, all at the bachelor's degree level. The college conferred 617 degrees in 2012. Business administration and management was the most popular area of study, with 80 degrees conferred, followed by political science and government and English language and literature. U.S. News & World Report ranked Gettysburg College #46 among national liberal arts colleges in 2013.
Lowest Net Price

1 - Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania
Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania had an average net price of $14,533. Tuition and fees in 2012-13 were $9,154 for Pennsylvania residents and $17,374 for out-of-state students. About 85% of beginning undergraduate students received grants, loans and/or scholarships in 2011-12, and 69% of all undergraduates received federal student loans in the average amount of $6,589.
2 - Pennsylvania State University - Penn State Mont Alto
Pennsylvania State University - Penn State Mont Alto offered an average net price of $18,908 to its approximately 1,200 students. In 2012-13, tuition and fees were $13,356 for in-state students and $19,912 for students from outside Pennsylvania. Around 92% of first-time undergraduate students received some type of financial aid, and 72% of all undergraduates received federal student loans averaging $6,932.
3 - Wilson College
Located in Chambersburg with about 745 students, Wilson College had a net price of $20,984, per the NCES. Tuition and fees in 2012-13 were $29,360. Nearly every beginning student - 99% - received some form of financial aid; 61% of all undergraduates received federal student loans in the average amount of $11,101.

Gettysburg College posted an 85% overall graduation rate, with a 2% transfer-out rate to other schools. About 79% of the students who began bachelor's degree programs in fall 2005 graduated in the 'normal' four years. A college's retention rate is the percentage of first-time students who begin a program one year and return the following year. Gettysburg College's retention rate for full-time bachelor's degree students was 92% from fall 2010 to fall 2011.
2 - Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania
The overall graduation rate at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania was 60%. No transfer-out rate was reported. Of the students who began bachelor's degree studies in fall 2005, 42% graduated in four years. The retention rate for bachelor's degree students at Shippensburg was 70% for full-time students and 50% for part-time students from fall 2010 to fall 2011.
3 - Pennsylvania State University - Penn State Mont Alto
Penn State Mont Alto is the larger of two schools in the Chambersburg area with overall graduation rates of 54%. About 31% of the first-time bachelor's degree students who began their studies in fall 2005 were able to graduate in four years. The college's retention rate was 76% for full-time bachelor's degree students from fall 2010 to fall 2011.
Lowest Student-Faculty Ratio
Students who want individualized attention from their instructors can look for a school with a low student-faculty ratio. These three mainstream colleges in the Chambersburg area have the lowest ratios, according to the NCES; all are below 15:1.
1 - Wilson College
The student-faculty ratio at Wilson College is a very low 9:1. The NCES reported that the college employed 45 full-time and 40 part-time faculty members in fall 2012. In 2013, U.S. News & World Report said Wilson had fewer than 20 students in 84% of its classes; the same source ranked the school as #13 among regional universities in the North.
2 - Gettysburg College
At Gettysburg College, the student-faculty ratio is 10:1. U.S. News & World Report said in 2013 that nearly 69% of the classes at Gettysburg have fewer than 20 students. According to the NCES, Gettysburg College employed 215 full-time and 77 part-time faculty members in fall 2012.
3 - Pennsylvania State University - Penn State Mont Alto
Pennsylvania State University - Penn State Mont Alto's student-faculty ratio was 14:1. The NCES reported that the university had 58 full-time and 58 part-time faculty members in fall 2012. Students can get help outside the classroom through the university's Academic Support Center, which offers tutoring, extra instruction and a variety of other services designed to help students succeed.
