University of North Carolina at Charlotte

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) is the fourth-largest school out of 16 within the University of North Carolina system. UNCC began as Charlotte College in 1946 to fulfill the needs of veterans returning from World War II and then took on its current name in 1965. Today students can pursue bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as post-baccalaureate and post-master's certificates at one of the school's seven colleges. Undergraduate degree programs are offered in subjects such as software and information systems, music, marketing and athletic training, while graduate degree programs are available in counseling, art administration, applied physics, public policy studies and more. In its 2009 rankings, U.S. News & World Report named UNCC as one of the Top Ten National Up and Coming Universities.

Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC

The Central Industrial Education Center and Mecklenburg College joined in 1963 to become Central Piedmont Community College. With its main campus in Charlotte, the 2-year community college has five additional campuses scattered throughout Mecklenburg County. Students can choose among diploma, associate's degree or certificate programs in more than 100 academic areas of study, including accounting, business administration, interior design, turfgrass management technology, interpreter education and dental hygiene. The college also offers distance learning services with more than 250 online classes available each semester.

Gaston College in Dallas, NC

Gaston College's main campus sits in Dallas, 20 miles northwest of Charlotte. Two satellite campuses are located in nearby Lincolnton and Belmont. Certificate, diploma and associate's degree programs are offered in areas such as biotechnology, computer programming, paralegal technology, medical assisting, fire protection technology and architectural technology. Students can also opt to take courses through the school's virtual campus, which offers online courses or interactive video conferences. The 2-year community college is strictly a commuter higher learning institution and does not have any housing on campus.
