Chemical Engineering Colleges and Schools in the U.S.
Chemical engineers use principals of chemistry to solve problems in manufacturing, byproduct treatment and production. There are many schools across the U.S. offering chemical engineering at many academic levels.
How to Select a Chemical Engineering School
Since chemical engineering is available at a number of academic levels prospective students need to look for different standards depending on his or her career aspirations. If applying for a bachelor's degree, students should make sure the school has a standard 4-year chemical engineering curriculum. The curriculum needs to include lower to upper-level chemistry and engineering courses. Separate chemistry and engineering courses give students a foundation in these areas before moving onto chemical engineering courses. Programs also need to educate students in various math courses, such as algebra and calculus.
Those looking into a master's degree chemical engineering program need to find schools that offer courses in organic chemistry, biology, physics and have elective requirements in biotechnology and bioprocessing. A master's degree program prepares students for upper level jobs as chemical engineers. Doctoral students need to find schools that allow them to conduct research in numerous scientific and environmental areas.
Students of all levels should find a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, which hands out accreditation based on curriculum, faculty and facilities. Potential schools should have laboratories where students can conduct experiments and classrooms with hubs for laptops and wireless Internet. In addition to this, the school should specify that its curriculum prepare students for licensure, which is required in all 50 U.S. states.
