Architecture Classes, Courses and Coursework Information
Architecture classes are typically available through bachelor's and master's degree programs in architecture or industrial engineering. Students learn how to create buildings for residential and urban areas using basic computer-aided design software and freehand drawing.
Architecture Classes Overview
Basic Architectural Drawing
In a basic architectural drawing course, students focus on learning the conventions of freehand drawing through observing, documenting and analyzing design details. Before taking this architecture class, students should complete a class in built environment studies. Introductory architecture courses are intended for students who wish to pursue an academic or professional degree in architecture.
Architectural Drafting and Design
Students in this intermediate architecture class practice graphic techniques used by civil and mechanical engineers. They practice creating 2- and 3-dimensional drawings to scale. Usually, the lecture portion of the course covers topics in industry standards, which students can then incorporate into their designs. Often, coursework includes practice in designing houses, apartment complexes and buildings. Students often add these drawings to their portfolio.
Technological components of architectural design are given an in-depth treatment in this intermediate architecture class. Theoretical and practical concerns for integrating electrical, transportation, HVAC, fire protection and water systems into building design are considered. Students also learn about structural design for new buildings and use technology to create simulated building plans.
Architecture Design for Cities
Students explore the architectural principles used in urban development. Often, this course includes repeated field trips to a nearby city, where students observe the residents and transportation and communication systems. Students also analyze how cities are changing and ways to use architecture to improve the area. Lessons include the study of urban structures and may cover historical architecture trends. Students may draft building designs, which they can use in their portfolio.
