CNA Classes in Ohio with School Information

Certified nurse assistant (CNA) classes are not available from many schools in Ohio. The University of Cincinnati and the University of Akron do, however, offer a variety of nursing programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

University of Cincinnati's CNA Programs

The University of Cincinnati (UC) was founded in 1819 and has been a leader in health innovation; university scientists created the first antihistamine and the oral polio vaccine. Although UC does not offer any certified nurse assistant (CNA) training programs, it does offer nursing programs that prepare students for nursing careers. As nurses, graduates may supervise a CNA.

Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

This associate degree program is offered through UC's Raymond Walters College. The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and is a 2-year program that prepares graduates for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. This A.A.S. program prepares students for jobs in home health care facilities, hospitals, clinics or schools. Coursework in general nursing basics, humanities and sciences is combined with hands-on clinical hours in health care settings.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

A BSN at CU prepares students for nursing and leadership positions in clinics, hospitals and other health care facilities. Coursework includes topics in behavioral, biological and physical sciences. The BSN program prepares students to become professional nurses or to continue on in advanced degree programs. Current Registered Nurses can complete CU's RN to BSN program, which is accelerated and can be completed by part-time students.

Master of Science in Nursing

This MSN program offers a traditional MSN tack, an RN to MSN option or an accelerated program option. Students learn theoretical nursing science perspectives and take advanced nursing courses like nursing intervention and evaluation. Other programs that fall under the MSN umbrella at UC include family nurse practitioner, pediatric nurse practitioner, occupational health and public health nursing.

Post-Master's Certificate in Nursing

Graduates of MSN programs who wish to gain more specialized knowledge can pursue the post-master's certificate. During the MSN program, students typically specialize in one area. Students in the certificate program can add another specialization to their credentials. Specializations include pediatric nursing, adult acute care and occupational health.

Ph.D. in Nursing

Graduates from this program may work as scientists or in the field of academia. Students must have current RN licenses to be admitted to this program as well as BSN or MSN degrees. Coursework focuses on using research methods to gain additional knowledge about nursing and health care. Ph.D. candidates must complete 135 quarter hours of classes but may be able to transfer up to 45 hours from their MSN degrees.

University of Akron's CNA Programs

The University of Akron (UA) was founded in 1870 and is a Division I school with 26,000 students. UA does not offer specific CNA training but does offer several of nursing degrees. The College of Nursing's bachelor's and master's degree programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The BSN at UA prepares student for entry-level nursing positions. Graduates can work as nurses in hospitals, nursing homes or health departments. This program gives students basic nursing skills that can be applied to families, communities and small groups. Nursing students start receiving clinical experience at local health facilities in their first semester. Some of UA's educational partners include Edwin Shaw Hospital and Head Start Center. Coursework for the BSN program includes nursing for older adults, anatomy and physiology, nursing research and nutrition.

Nurse Educator Certificate

This 12-credit program is designed for current nurses who wish to work as nurse educators. Coursework covers instructional methods and curriculum for nursing education and includes a practicum.

Nursing Management and Business Certificate

The nursing management and business certificate is also a 12-credit program and includes classes in resource management, fiscal management and organizational behavior. The program is designed for students who already hold at least a bachelor's degree. Certificate-holders can work as patient care managers and nurse leaders.

Master of Science in Nursing

UA's MSN program is provided for students wishing to advance their nursing skills. Individuals in this program may go on to become clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists or nurse practitioners. Students may also choose to specialize in areas such as mental health, children and adolescents, geriatrics or nursing anesthesia.

Ph.D. in Nursing

This is a joint program offered by Akron's nursing college and Kent State University. The diploma earned will be issued from the students' college of admittance. The program covers nursing knowledge, research, cognates and leadership and policy for health care. Students are also required to write and defend a dissertation. Students learn through quantitative and qualitative research, which prepares them for integration, application and teaching.
