CNA Training in Texas with Certification Information
Texas residents interested in becoming a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), known in some states as a Certified Nurse Assistant, can choose from many schools that offer training programs preparing them for CNA certification. Laredo Community College and South Texas College in McAllen both have state-approved CNA programs.
Laredo Community College's CNA Program
Founded in 1947, Laredo Community College features a student body of over 12,000 students. The school has two campuses, including one in downtown Laredo, Texas. Students can consider associate's degree and certificate programs in a wide array of vocational and academic fields, such as a nursing assistant certificate program.
Nursing Assistant Certificate
This 16-week program trains students to become a CNA in Texas. The CNA training includes courses on medical terminology, basic sanitation, patient care and nursing procedures. The curriculum includes group discussions, lectures and clinical practices, which allow students to gain hands-on experience. Upon completing the program, graduates receive a certificate. They also qualify to sit for the state CNA competency examination, administered by the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services (NACES). Once students pass the exam, they're Certified Nurse Aides in the state of Texas.
South Texas College's CNA Program
South Texas College, located in McAllen, Texas, serves over 28,000 students on its five campuses. The school has over 100 certificate and degree programs for individuals to choose from.
Patient Care Assistant Certificate
South Texas College offers a 21-credit hour certificate program for aspiring patient care assistants. Similar to CNA training, the program incorporates instruction in both the theory and practice of introductory nursing care. All of the required coursework may be completed within two semesters. The first semester focuses on basic nursing procedures, like nurse aide for health care and body systems, while the second semester deals with acute and specialized nursing care, like phlebotomy and monitoring skills. After completing the first semester of this program, certificate candidates are eligible to sit for NACES' state competency exam; upon graduating from the program, individuals may take the Patient Care Technician testing exam offered by the National Center for Competency Training.
