Texas Schools with CNA Training Programs
Texas residents interested in becoming certified nurse aides (CNAs), also called certified nurse assistants, can choose from many 2-year and 4-year schools that offer CNA training programs. These programs include classroom and hands-on clinical education designed to prepare students to take certification exams and work in the healthcare industry.

- Laredo Community College, which has a campus located near downtown Laredo, offers a 16-week CNA program.
- South Texas College offers a Patient Care Assistant Certificate. The school is located in the southernmost part of Texas in the city of McAllen.
Laredo Community College
Founded in 1947, Laredo Community College currently has a student body of over 8,000 students. The school has two campuses in the Laredo area. This school offers associate's degree and certificate programs in a wide array of vocational and academic fields.
Nursing Assistant Certificate
This 1-semester certificate program trains students to become CNAs in Texas. The CNA training includes courses on medical terminology, basic sanitation, patient care and nursing procedures. The curriculum includes group discussions, lectures and clinical practices, which allow students to gain hands-on experience. Upon completing the program, graduates receive a certificate. They also qualify to sit for the state CNA competency examination, administered by the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services (NACES). Once students pass the exam, they're CNAs in the state of Texas.
South Texas College
South Texas College serves over 30,000 students on five campuses and at two centers. The school has over 100 certificate and degree programs for individuals to choose from.
Patient Care Assistant Certificate
South Texas College offers a 16-credit certificate program for aspiring patient care assistants. Similar to CNA training, the program incorporates instruction in the theory and practice of introductory nursing care. All of the required coursework may be completed within one year. The first semester focuses on basic nursing procedures, like nurse aide for health care and body systems, while the second semester deals with acute and specialized nursing care, like phlebotomy and monitoring skills. After completing the first semester of this program, certificate candidates are eligible to sit for NACES' state competency exam; upon graduating from the program, individuals may take the Patient Care Technician testing exam offered by the National Center for Competency Training.
