Comparison of CNA Training Programs in Seattle, WA

Individuals who want to become certified nursing assistants (CNAs) can choose from several schools in the Seattle, WA, area. North Seattle Community College offers a nursing assistant program that students can complete in one quarter. Shoreline Community College offers an 11-week program, and the 1-quarter nursing assistant program at South Seattle Community College is offered four times per year. Once students complete nursing assistant training, they must pass a written and skills exam through the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services to earn the CNA credential.

Programs at North Seattle Community College

Part of the Seattle Community College District, North Seattle Community College (NSCC) offers a variety of educational training programs, including degree and certificate programs, transfer programs, career training, continuing education and online programs. Several programs are also offered in an I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) format, which is designed for Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language students. I-BEST programs are taught by two instructors, and students can gain both technical skills and proficiency in basic math, reading and the English language.

Nursing Assistant Certificate

The 14-credit nursing assistant program at NSCC is approved as a CNA training program and as an I-BEST program. The curriculum includes 96 classroom hours in anatomy and physiology, interpersonal skills, clients' rights, personal care and infection control, along with first aid and CPR for the healthcare provider.

Additionally, students complete 104 clinical/lab hours; supervised clinical experiences provide students with hands-on training. Applicants must be high school graduates and at least 18 years of age. Proficiency in English and reading is also necessary, and prospective students need to submit a writing sample. Additionally, they must attend an information session and provide proof of current immunizations and criminal background check clearances.

Programs at Shoreline Community College

Shoreline Community College was founded in 1964 and has since grown into a college that offers more than 100 education-training programs, including career training, professional/technical programs and lifelong learning opportunities. The nursing assistant program is offered in an I-BEST format.

Nursing Assistant Certificate

The 17-credit nursing assistant program at Shoreline Community College can be completed in one quarter. The curriculum includes 123 hours of theory-based courses, 44 hours of skills labs and 88 hours in a clinical externship. The classroom portion is held three days per week during the day, while labs and clinicals are held offsite at various times. Students take courses in diseases, care giving, nutrition and body systems.

To be eligible for this program, applicants need to be 18 years old and must provide proof of criminal background check clearances, current immunizations and adequate placement test scores. Completing this program also earns students certificates in other areas, such as First Aid/CPR, HIV/AIDs training, mental health and nurse delegation for caregivers.

Programs at South Seattle Community College

Also part of the Seattle Community College District, South Seattle Community College (SSCC) is a public college located on an 87-acre plot overlooking the mountains. In addition to nursing programs, the college offers culinary arts, engineering and business programs through its Professional and Technical Education Department.

Nursing Assistant Certificate

SSCC's nursing assistant program is only offered in the daytime; it's also an approved I-BEST program. Students learn to provide basic care to patients in hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities, and they study infection control, emergency preparedness and restorative care. Prior to entering the program, applicants must provide proof of background check clearance, current immunizations and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider certification. An orientation session is mandatory as well.
