School Overviews

Although the East Coast spans 15 states with numerous well-known colleges and universities, Florida and Virginia are home to the ten largest schools in the region, according to 2014 data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Of these, the three largest are Liberty University, Miami Dade College and the University of Central Florida (UCF), which are all 4-year schools; however, Miami Dade primarily grants associate's degrees. Liberty University is a private, not-for-profit school, while Miami Dade and UCF are public schools.

Liberty University

Liberty University is located in Lynchburg, Virginia. This private school is the largest Christian university in the world, and U.S. News and World Report ranked it among the top 100 regional universities in the South for 2014. It also ranked 23rd among the best colleges for veterans. Liberty offers over 350 academic programs, with many programs available through online learning. The areas of study offered at Liberty include education, law, music, religion, osteopathic medicine and engineering, among many others.

Miami Dade College

The main campus of Miami Dade College is located on the Atlantic coast of Florida at the north end of Biscayne Bay. Miami Dade awards the most associate's degrees of any college in the U.S., including the most associate's degrees to minority students. It offers over 150 academic programs, mostly at the associate's degree or certificate level, though it provides eight bachelor's degree options. These 4-year options include exceptional student education, secondary mathematics education, secondary science education, public safety management and nursing.

University of Central Florida

University of Central Florida (UCF) is located at the eastern edge of Orlando, Florida. In 2014, the Princeton Review named UCF as one of the nation's 'Best Value' colleges. UCF is composed of 12 colleges in areas such as arts and humanities, business administration, education, engineering and computer science, hospitality management and medicine. The university has made notable research contributions in business administration, computer science, digital media, education, engineering, hospitality management and optics. UCF offers more than 200 majors, and its graduate degree programs include master's and doctoral options.
