List of Computer Application Courses

Beginning Computer Applications

This introductory course provides students with the opportunity to practice using computer operating systems. They use graphic designs, spreadsheets and the Internet. The course often includes information about the social, political and economic effects of technology on society. Students examine modern examples of how technology is used for research and communication.

Using Computer Applications

This is a practical, introductory computer applications class that trains individuals to use a wide range of computer application programs. Students practice using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They create presentations and text documents, practice using command keys and formatting material for ease of reading. Occasionally, this course touches on touch typing, requiring students to get their typing speed up to a certain number of words per minute, usually around 45.

Adobe Photoshop

Students taking this intermediate course learn how to design, format and edit images using Adobe Photoshop. They color, lighten, darken and make photos presentable for print or Web publication. Students optimize images and learn how to layer them to create fuller, richer designs. Students also edit photos to add colors and modify images.

Intermediate Computer Applications

Through this computer applications course, students gain experience designing and publishing Web pages. They add animation and sound to computer graphics. Students practice the basics of Web design and find ways to develop the basics to create more advanced designs. Often, desktop publishing techniques are included, and students practice using software programs to edit Web pages and prepare them for publication.

Web Page Design

Students build on the basic principles of Web design acquired through intermediate classes. They learn and incorporate computer programming languages in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) to design, plan and complete a Web site. The students taking this class learn how to incorporate links to and from other Web pages. They also add videos and images, editing them to fit the screen.

Training Programs

Students interested in completing degree programs in computer applications can complete certificate programs or associate's and bachelor's degrees. They learn to create Web pages and edit them before publication. Some programs focus more on operating the basic software program and other focus more on using computer languages to create HTML code. Training programs can take anywhere from 1-4 years.
