Continuing Education Classes in Virginia with School Info

Universities and colleges throughout Virginia provide opportunities for continuing education. Aside from the many classes and programs offered through community colleges, many state universities have departments or schools dedicated to providing continuing education opportunities. Two such schools are the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and George Mason University in Fairfax.

University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies' Continuing Education Programs

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) at the University of Virginia provides continuing education classes for adult and non-traditional students. In addition to certificate programs, offered both online and on-site, the school offers an adult degree completion program, a pre-medical program, master's degrees for K-12 educators, professional development opportunities and personal enrichment classes. Programs are available on campuses throughout Virginia.

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Administration and Supervision

This degree is designed for experienced educators and, like all the degree programs through the SCPS, it can be completed on a part-time basis. The curriculum provides knowledge of educational practice and theory and the ability to apply theory and research to educational practices.

Master of Engineering Programs

Students can pursue master's degrees in systems, chemical, civil, electrical and computer, mechanical and aerospace or materials science engineering. These programs are designed for practicing engineers to help advance their careers. Current engineers may also pursue a master's degree online through the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program.

Master of Education Programs

Several graduate education degree programs are also available through the SCPS, including administration, mathematics, reading, social foundations of education and special education. These programs are designed for current teachers to enhance their abilities within the specialized area of study.

Information Technology Certificate

This program prepares students for entry- or mid-level careers in the information systems field. Coursework covers terminology, business processes, web design, systems analysis and design, project management and quality assurance.

Nonprofit Management Certificate

Designed for non-profit leaders, staff and board members, this program focuses on organizations' missions, building relationships and technology application to non-profit operations. The program is highly flexible, allowing students to choose courses that fit their interests and needs.

George Mason University's Continuing Education Programs

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at George Mason University provides continuing education classes to Virginia students. The university offers 17 classroom-based certificate programs, in addition to online certificate programs, credentialing and recertification programs and a variety of seminars and workshops.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate

This program, geared towards working professionals, provides technical knowledge of GIS and helps students to enhance their spatial thinking. Core courses cover the ArcGIS 9.3 application, spatial analysis, database integration and map design.

Human Resource Management Certificate

Students are prepared for the Society for Human Resource Management credentialing exam to earn the Professional Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources designation. The program consists of six modules covering strategic management, workforce planning, human resource development, compensation and benefits, labor relations and risk management.

Paralegal Certificate

Designed for the beginning or advanced legal worker, this program provides students with marketable skills for careers in law-related environments. Topics of study include legal terminology, legal research, document preparation, legal writing and the litigation process.

Project Management Certificate

This program prepares students to sit for the Project Management Professional certification exam administered by the Project Management Institute. Core courses include the essential of project management, estimating, managing teams and an exam preparation.
