Bristol Technical Education Center

Located in Bristol, this technical school offers a 900-contact-hour certificate program in culinary arts (baking/food trades) that may be used towards state culinary apprenticeships. Classes teach skills in basic cooking, garde manger and bread making. Select students may attend a second year of study for more intensive training. Students practice their new skills in the school's restaurant, and those who qualify for work-based learning receive credit through cooperative work assignments.

Gateway Community College

New Haven's Gateway Community College has a culinary arts full- or part-time certificate program requiring 30 credit hours for completion. Students learn about all areas of food preparation, including food handling, pouring/serving, using various types of equipment and sanitizing. Newly acquired proficiencies are put to use while interacting with customers and serving meals at the school-operated Café Vincenzo. Students will need to travel to internship or practical training locations.

Manchester Community College

Located in Manchester, this college's Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts Department offers cooking classes in its 30-credit culinary arts or 24-credit professional baking certificate programs. In addition, cooking classes are offered through a 63-credit associate's degree program in culinary arts. Aspiring cooks may take classes in food preparation, sanitation/safety, baking, nutrition and international foods. All 3 of these programs require a cooperative work experience.

Naugatuck Valley Community College

Waterbury-based Naugatuck Valley Community College prepares students for food service careers in its full- or part-time culinary arts certificate program. Developmental classes in math, English or reading may be required of applicants, depending on placement testing. Culinary classes in this program include food preparation, food production/purchasing, service management, catering/event management, nutrition and hospitality. Students also choose a baking elective to bring their total credits earned in this 4-semester program to 25-27. Individuals who want to earn an associate's degree can use these credits for degree programs in foodservice or hotel management.

Norwalk Community College

Located in Norwalk, this school's Business Department offers a certificate in culinary arts. Classes include training in food preparation principles, sanitation/safety, baking/pastry arts, nutrition and international foods. Students also complete a cooperative work experience to complete this 30-credit, 2-semester program. Many of these credits may also be used towards degrees in hospitality management.
