Essential Information

Bachelor's degrees in cosmetology don't exist; however, there are associate degrees in cosmetology that students can earn. Associate-level certificate programs are available, as well. Such programs are designed to help students develop the knowledge and artistry required to pursue professional careers. Following is a description of a few relevant sample programs.


Associate of Applied Science Degree in Cosmetology at San Diego City College

This program equips students with skills necessary for entry-level cosmetology positions. Learning fundamental techniques for client-based cosmetology includes taking both academic coursework and completing laboratory work. Students in the cosmetology program are required to purchase textbooks, equipment and a cosmetology tool kit. The program regularly brings in guest speakers and facilitates student visitation to local salons to allow students to experience current industry practices. In addition to cosmetology skills, students also develop sales, management and client relations skills.

Courses award between two and six credits and usually include several lab courses. The following are some examples:

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Cosmetology at Sandhills Community College

This program emphasizes both the scientific and artistic principles of cosmetology. Courses focus on fundamental practices and feature hands-on environments. The classroom simulates a salon-type environment, giving students skills that improve their odds of being hired. The program also teaches students other professional conduct practices in the field of cosmotology, such as communicative, critical thinking, professional judgment and motor skills.

Courses in this program are worth between two and four credits and require anywhere from 10 to 24 hours of work per week, though lab courses usually require more time. Here are some examples:

Associate of Cosmetology at McCann School of Business & Technology

This program trains students in the fundamental scientific concepts of cosmetology, while also fostering the artistic and aesthetic skills necessary to succeed in a professional salon environment. All learning is hands-on, and classrooms simulate cosmetology work environments. Upon completion, students are prepared to sit for the Pennsylvania state cosmetology licensing exam. The school notes that the most successful students enjoy art and have exceptional interpersonal skills. A strong business aptitude is also helpful.
