Essential Information

Cosmetology programs in Hawaii lead to certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in the field. Programs may be completed in two years or less. In addition to classroom instruction, students spend hours of time in clinical environments honing their craft. Work-study opportunities may be available to some students. Specializations are also available, allowing students to customize their education to the job they hope to hold.

Career Requirements

According to the Hawaii Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, beauty operators include cosmetologists, nail technicians, hairdressers and estheticians, all of whom need to be licensed. Applicants for licensure must be at least 16 years old and have a high school diploma. They must also have completed an approved cosmetology program or apprenticeship and passed the state's board examination. Renewal occurs every two years for beauty operators.

For licensing, cosmetologists must have completed 1,800 training hours, and it's 1,250 hours for hairdressers, 600 hours for estheticians and 350 hours for nail technicians. The number of training hours required for apprentices are typically double that of traditional cosmetology programs.

Out of the four schools offering cosmetology programs in Hawaii, there's only one public school and one private not-for-profit school. Read on for more detailed information about these cosmetology programs offered in Hawaii, at least one of which meets the licensing requirements for the State of Hawaii.

Honolulu Community College

Named after the city in which it's located, Honolulu Community College offers several options for students looking for a cosmetology school. This school offers the only cosmetology program in the University of Hawaii System. Prior to entering into any of the cosmetology programs, students have to possess a high school diploma or a GED and meet some necessary English course requirements. Students who just want to specialize in health and skincare can pursue an esthetics certificate, while students interested in the full range of cosmetology can pick between an associate's degree and a certificate. In total, cosmetology students enrolled at HCC spend at least 1,800 hours in lecture and clinical environments. The faculty members use the international teaching strategy called Pivot Point, in addition to letting students work in a real salon environment.
