Individuals interested in obtaining CPR certification, whether for employment or personal development, can choose from two schools in the Portland, Oregon area. Portland State University offers two cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training programs. Portland Community College offers several different training programs, including CPR, AED and First Aid. These programs teach lifesaving techniques for infants, children and adults. The programs at both schools help students obtain CPR certification.

Programs at Portland State University
Portland State University (PSU) offers more than 220 degree programs as well as lifelong learning programs. Additionally, PSU offers student and instructor CPR training programs through the campus recreation program. Training is based on American Red Cross standards, with 2-year certifications issued through that organization.
CPR/AED Instructor: Professional Rescuer and Workplace/First Aid
The workplace CPR course is designed to teach procedures to those wanting to become CPR/AED instructors. Basic CPR techniques, how to assist a choking victim, heart attack symptoms, stroke symptoms and AED training are all covered in this course. Prior to the start of the class, applicants must complete an online pre-course that lasts from 3-4 hours.
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider
This course is designed for those who must hold CPR certification to meet employer requirements. Training covers responses to cardiac and respiratory situations in adults, including CPR, AED and the use of resuscitation masks.
Programs at Portland Community College
Portland Community College offers traditional college programs, adult learning, pre-college programs and distance learning. With three campuses, seven learning centers and various community centers, individuals have a multitude of learning opportunities, including several classes that provide training in CPR.
CPR/AED Professional
This course, which includes 10 lecture hours, is for public safety and healthcare emergency responders. Training includes adult, child and infant CPR, as well as AED and bag-valve mask usage. Precautions against bloodborne pathogens are also covered. This training prepares students for certification by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross.
Standard First Aid and CPR/AED
This course is aimed at those interested in learning first aid and how to perform CPR. Participants learn to provide basic emergency care to sick or injured persons until medical professionals arrive, including the use of AED and care for wounds, burns and bone injuries. Completing this course qualifies graduates for an AHA or American Red Cross certificate in Standard First Aid and CPR/AED for adult/child and infant CPR.
First Aid and CPR Professional
This course combines basic first aid training with professional CPR skills for use in the home, at work and around the community. Participants learn to perform CPR on adults, children and infants, while also obtaining knowledge of AED techniques. Upon completion, participants can be certified by the AHA or American Red Cross for Standard First Aid and professional CPR/AED.
Other Options
Across the state line in Washington, Clark College offers community CPR, healthcare provider CPR and child care CPR courses. These classes do not offer any educational credits; however, they may qualify students for AHA certification cards or Washington state licensure for child care providers.
