University of Nevada - Las Vegas
The Division of Educational Outreach serves over 70,000 students every year with its programs for government workers, adults, military staff and retirees. This division houses the CPR courses covered below.
CPR/AED Adult and Child Course
The bulk of this class focuses on teaching students the CPR skills necessary to help in an emergency situation. The techniques covered in this program are appropriate for adults and children. In addition to CPR, students learn about shock treatment, choking and cardiac arrest. Each student gets a face shield and a manikin to practice CPR on. Completion of the course includes a 2-year certification card from the American Heart Association (AHA).
CPR/AED and First Aid Adult and Child Course
The information covered in the previous CPR class is also in this course. However, in addition to that information, students also learn about bleeding injuries, bites and stings, illnesses and musculoskeletal injuries. Upon completing this course, students earn an AHA certification. This certification is good for two years and accepted by many medical and teaching institutions.
Pet First Aid and CPR Course
Choking management, pet bandaging techniques and pet CPR are all issues that are covered in this course. Students also learn how to create a first-aid kit for pets. This is a hands-on course that allows students to practice pet emergencies on stuffed animals. The school asks that students don't bring any pets to class.
College of Southern Nevada
The AHA is heavily involved with the CPR classes at this school. Not only does the AHA offer continuing education classes through the college, but the organization also works within the community by training employees at medical organizations. With the exception of the advanced life support classes, all of the CPR classes at CSN are available a couple of times a month.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider Course
Students who are interested in healthcare typically pursue this class. In addition to the CPR portion of this course, students are also educated on how to respond to incidents involving choking. Additionally, students learn how to use tools like the automated external defibrillator (AED).
Individuals who aren't going to be using CPR regularly, but need a CPR credential can enroll in this course. Professionals such as lifeguards, fitness trainers, teachers and other non-healthcare professions are ideal students. Along with the AED and CPR training, students can voluntarily complete first aid training.
CPR for Friends and Family
Certification cards aren't given out at the end of this class. Instead, this is a course that's intended for everyday people who want to learn how to use CPR only on their family members and friends in emergency situations.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course
Held on a monthly basis, this course is for healthcare providers who stabilize pediatric patients being transported to and from a hospital in emergencies. This course grants recertification and initial PALS certification for a 2-year period.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course
This CPR class is offered once a month. The initial and recertification earned from the course is good for two years. In this course, students learn how to help adult patients suffering from cardiac arrest while travelling in and out of a hospital. Other topics address stroke, bradycardias, ventricular fibrillation and respiratory management. Enrollees need an EKG certificate and current AHA BLS for the Healthcare Provider certification or equivalent work experience.
AHA BLS/CPR Instructor Course
This is a class for a student who already has CPR certification. Students who want to instruct others how to perform CPR take this course. Prior to earning this certification, students have to log in some student teaching, secure a sponsor and possess a letter of reference.
Roseman University of Health Sciences
While Roseman doesn't offer standalone CPR courses, this lifesaving technique is a requirement for the dental and nursing programs.
Management of Medical Emergencies and CPR Training Course
This CPR and medical emergency management class is worth half a credit. Students are educated on the diagnosis and management of emergencies and common medical emergencies. The examinations and various demonstrations for this training session can help students earn their basic CPR certification.
