Greensboro Culinary Arts Schools

Students wishing to enroll in a culinary arts program in the Greensboro, NC, area have two options within a 30-minute drive of downtown Greensboro. This article puts a spotlight on the program requirements and classes required at each school.   • Located in Jamestown, NC, Guilford Technical Community College is roughly 12 miles away from central Greensboro and is the largest school option. Students can choose from associate degree, diploma and certificate programs in the culinary arts.
  • Alamance Community College, which is located about 26 miles from downtown Greensboro in Graham, NC, offers culinary associate degree and certificate programs.

Guilford Technical Community College

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) has an enrollment of more than 15,000 students and began awarding associate degrees in 1965. The school offers several culinary arts program options at its main campus in Jamestown that are available with day or evening class schedules. The culinary arts program at GTCC should give students the educational background needed to gain entry-level employment in the food service industry or become certified through the American Culinary Federation.

Culinary Arts Certificate

GTCC's certificate program consists of 17 credits (plus the developmental prerequisite courses) that can be completed in two part-time semesters. Students take courses that provide them with training in safety and sanitation standards, baked goods, nutrition and management.

Culinary Arts Diploma

The diploma program at GTCC consists of two 17-credit semesters, as well as one five-credit class taken upon completion of all other program requirements. Students are required to complete a handful of prerequisites before they can take program-specific courses. Students take many of the same courses offered in the associate and certificate programs, ranging from food and beverage services to nutrition. The final requirement for this program is an advanced culinary skills class that is taken in the summer following the spring term.

Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts

The Associate of Applied Science program at GTCC is a 71-credit program designed to be completed in two years, including one summer term. GTCC requires students complete certain developmental prerequisites in reading, writing and math prior to enrolling in the core curriculum. Once enrolled, students take courses on sanitation and safety, hospitality and tourism, nutrition, food science and interpersonal communication. Additionally, students take specialty courses that cover topics including baking, classical cuisine, global cuisine and basic culinary skills.

Alamance Community College

Established in 1958, Alamance Community College is among the oldest community colleges in North Carolina and began awarding associate degrees in 1963. The school offers an associate degree program in culinary arts, as well as a certificate program for culinary specialists. Upon completion of one of these programs, students will have the knowledge and practical skills needed to gain entry-level employment in food service settings such as hotels, clubs, catering companies, restaurants and healthcare facilities.

Culinary Specialist Certificate

The culinary specialist certificate option at Alamance is an 18-credit program that provides students with practical and theoretical training in the culinary arts field. Students take courses in baking, nutrition, sanitation and culinary skills to build a solid foundation to later pursue a career or further their education in the culinary arts field.

Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts

Alamance Community College offers a 72-credit Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts program that is designed to be completed in two years by taking courses in the fall, spring and summer semesters. Students gain practical experience and theoretical knowledge through classes in sanitation and safety, food science, baking, nutrition, food and beverage services, pastry, global cuisine and wine appreciation. Additionally, students must take general education courses such as psychology, PC literacy, oral communication and organic chemistry.
