Custom Fabrication Course and Class Descriptions
Through custom fabrication classes, students learn how to permanently join metal parts to create automobiles, engines, airplanes and other pieces of manufactured equipment.
Many fabricators and assemblers only need a high school diploma followed by on-the-job training. However, custom fabrication courses are available through certificate programs that can last 6 months to 1 year or 2-year associate's degree programs in automotive technology, custom fabrication and welding. Courses often include a hands-on component that allows them to put their skills into practice.

Students in introductory custom fabrication courses study the basic skills of measuring, pattern development, fastener selection and mechanical drawing. Additional instruction includes sheet metal fabrication, body soldering and metal shaping. Students in custom fabrication courses have access to many specialized tools, including bead rollers, power hammers, English wheels and louver presses. Students will learn to work with the latest in robotics, sensing technology and computers.
Street Rod and Custom Fabrication
Students learn the techniques used to create customized vehicles using hand tools to work with sheet metal by bending it to fit a vehicle for structural repairs. The course also includes an overview of painting techniques so that students can add customized special effects, like pinstriping and airbrushing. Students develop the ability to work with sheet metal while keeping it strong and practice using basic finishing tools.
Custom Fabrication and Chassis Design
Students in this class fabricate the body of an automobile using tools like foot sheers and iron workers. They learn how to work with different vehicle parts and study the correct methods for assembling to create a custom car. Part of the course involves the study of classic cars designed by Ford, Dodge and General Motors in order to understand how they work and the advantages and disadvantages of each design. Advanced custom fabrication courses in chassis design also includes installing electrical systems and safety testing.
Custom fabrication courses like this welding class prepare students to perform car body repairs using specialized welding practices. Students will learn to use oxy-acetylene welding tools. Using welding techniques, students cut steel and aluminum into shapes and practice joining them by welding. This allows them to decide what they want finished product to look like.
