Dental hygienists must have a state license to provide services. In Alabama, aspiring dental hygienists can get licensed through the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners. In order to get licensed, individuals need to complete an approved dental hygiene program and pass the state licensing exam. This agency also offers a state dental hygiene training program that leads to licensure. Currently, there is only one college in Alabama that offers a dental hygiene degree program. Alabama Board of Dental Examiners

The Alabama Board of Dental Examiners offers a state dental hygiene program that utilizes the dental school facilities at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. The program is open to currently employed dental assistants with 24 months of verifiable dental office experience. Although the non-credit program does not award a degree, students will be eligible to sit for the state licensing exam upon program completion. The program consists of traditional classroom and clinical instruction. Traditional classroom instruction take place at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and clinical instruction is held under the supervision of a dentist-instructor who has been state certified to provide clinical training.

Wallace State Community College

Wallace State Community College is located in Hanceville and offers a 2-year dental hygiene program that leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree. Completing this approved program qualifies students for the state licensing exam. This program has selective admission, and students need to submit ACT scores and complete some college-level general education courses for program consideration. Students in their second year of the program complete clinical rotations that take place at various sites in Birmingham. The dental hygiene program is offered on a full-time basis and includes one mandatory summer session.
