Comparison of Dental Hygiene Programs in Atlanta
Prospective dental hygienists must often earn at least an associate's degree to work in the field, though bachelor's degrees can open up additional career opportunities. While there are no dental hygiene programs located right in Atlanta, some schools just outside of the city do provide programs in the field. In addition to degree programs, Georgia Perimeter College and Clayton State University have dental clinics on-campus. Georgia Perimeter College is 14 miles from Atlanta, while Clayton State University is about 20 miles. Programs at Georgia Perimeter College
Students at Georgia Perimeter College have the option of enrolling in educational or vocational programs. The educational programs at the school offer students a chance to transfer their credits to a 4-year university. In addition to the dental hygiene program, vocational programs cover areas such as nursing and radiologic technology.
Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene
The Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene is a 5-semester program that combines academic coursework with hands-on experience. Before taking any core dental hygiene courses, students must complete general education requirements in human anatomy and physiology, microbiology and chemistry. Core dental hygiene courses include dental tissues, dental radiology, dental materials and oral health. Five dental hygiene clinicals are also required, and a dental clinic is located on-campus. Graduates are eligible to take the Dental Hygiene National Board Examination.
Programs at Clayton State University
Clayton State University provides educational opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The College of Health offers degree programs in dental hygiene and nursing. The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene allows students to pursue advancement opportunities in the field. For example, graduates of the program can work as dental hygiene clinicians, researchers, health promoters and dental office managers. The Dental Hygiene Clinic on campus provides students with an opportunity to receive dental care from faculty members.
Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) - Basic Licensure Track
This 4-year program combines classroom instruction with clinical experience. Courses include dental pathology, periodontics, dental pharmacology, dental anatomy, nutrition and dental materials. Non-major lessons cover communication, humanities, science, mathematics and social sciences. Students apply dental hygiene techniques under close supervision in the on-campus dental clinic. Applicants can complete general-education requirements through distance-learning.
Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene - Registered Dental Hygiene (RDH) to BSDH Track
This program is for those who already have an associate's degree and who work as dental hygienists. The RDH-to-BSDH program can be taken full- or part-time, with some classes offered online. Additionally, students may choose from day or evening classes. Required courses address dental management and marketing, applied research, advanced periodontics and health care legal issues. Students also complete independent study. Participants can complete the upper-level dental hygiene courses in three semesters once they've completed the core courses.
Programs at Gainesville State College
Gainesville State College offers degrees at the associate's and bachelor's levels. Career associate's degree programs, including one in dental hygiene, are completed in cooperation with Lanier Technical College (LTC). Other career programs include clinical laboratory technology, surgical technology and medical assisting.
Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene
Students enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene will complete pre-clinical coursework at Gainesville State College before taking dental hygiene courses at LTC. The pre-coursework covers topics in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry and personal health and wellness. The clinical coursework requires students to complete courses in tooth anatomy, dental materials, oral embryology, pharmacology and pain control and radiology. Students also must complete several labs and clinical requirements.

Lanier Technical College (LTC) is also 39 miles away from Atlanta, and students in this program can earn a dental hygiene diploma from LTC and an Associate of Applied Science from Gainesville State College. Georgia Highlands College is 49 miles from the city and also offers a dental hygiene associate's degree.
