Dental Hygiene Schools in Ohio
Ohio requires that dental hygienists be licensed by the Ohio State Dental Board. To become a licensed dental hygienist, an individual must be at least 18 years old and graduate from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association. He or she must also pass one of several available exams, including exams administered by the Central Regional Dental Testing Service and the Western Regional Examination Board, among others. The ten schools profiled below all offer CODA-accredited dental hygiene programs.
Columbus State Community College
Located in Columbus, this community college enrolls about 31,000 students. The college's Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene program requires 72 credit hours of study. Classes in this program, some of which are available through distance-learning methods, cover topics like human pathophysiology, community health concepts and dental materials. The program's curriculum also includes several clinical experiences.
Cuyahoga Community College
Cuyahoga Community College is located in Cleveland and enrolls approximately 31,000 students. It offers an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene program. Coursework covers topics like dental hygiene care ethics, dental anatomy and community oral health.
Lakeland Community College
The Associate of Applied Science program in dental hygiene at this two-year college in Kirtland requires completion of 75 credit hours of study. Class topics include practice management, dental materials, preventive oral hygiene concepts and other topics. Students also complete several clinical experiences.
Lorain County Community College
Elyria is the home of Lorain County Community College, where approximately 13,000 students are enrolled. The college's Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene program includes 75 credit hours of study. Besides taking courses in oral pathology, periodontics and dental pharmacology, students also take classes in microbiology and bioethics.
Ohio State University
With close to 57,000 students enrolled in this university in Columbus, Ohio State University is the largest public school offering dental hygiene programs in Ohio. The Bachelor of Science program in dental hygiene requires four years of study. Students select an area of specialization from dental hygiene education or expanded functions, or they may create an individualized area of specialization. Classes include oral anatomy, tooth morphology and occlusion, oral radiography and periodontology.
The school's baccalaureate degree completion program in dental hygiene is designed for students possessing an associate's degree or certificate in the field. This program, which awards graduates a Bachelor of Science, requires about 124 credit hours; up to 40 can be transferred from the previous program. Dental hygiene-related coursework focuses on subjects such as oral health, behavior management and periodontal trends.
Additionally, the university offers a Master of Dental Hygiene program that requires 37 credit hours of study. Classes focus on educational policy and management in dental hygiene, leadership and administration in dental hygiene education, research utilization and other topics. Students in this program also write a thesis and complete an internship.
Owens Community College
Based in Perrysburg, Owens Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene on its campus in Toledo. The program includes 72 credits of study in courses such as preventive dentistry, dental radiographic imaging and dental materials. The program's curriculum is delivered through lectures and labs.
The school also offers an Associate of Science program in a pre-dental hygiene concentration. This 61-credit-hour program is also offered on the school's Toledo campus. Dental hygiene-related coursework covers topics like microbiology, chemistry, physiology and nutrition.
Additionally, the school offers an Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) Certificate program for certified dental hygienists and dental assistants. This program includes courses in tooth morphology and the language of medicine. It also includes a practicum and a course that focuses on the EFDA certification exam.
Sinclair Community College
Sinclair Community College, located in Dayton, enrolls about 21,000 students. The college offers an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene program that consists of 73 credits of study. Classes cover topics like head, neck and dental anatomy; dental hygiene instrumentation; and oral histology. The program's curriculum includes lectures, labs and a clinical experience.
The college also offers an Expanded Functions for Dental Auxiliaries Short-Term Certificate program that is open to registered dental hygienists and dental assistants. This 13-credit-hour program prepares graduates to take exams that certify them to perform dental restorations.
Stark State College
Stark State College enrolls over 15,000 students and is located in North Canton. Students in the 73-credit-hour Associate of Applied Science program in dental hygiene take classes covering topics like nutrition in dentistry, dental pharmacology and microbiology.
Two additional programs award an Associate of Technical Studies and a Career Enhancement Certificate, each in expanded functions dental auxiliary. These programs are designed for registered dental hygienists and dental assistants seeking to advance their knowledge and skills in performing tooth restoration. The associate's program requires 65-66 credit hours of study, while the certificate program requires nine credit hours.
University of Cincinnati - Blue Ash College
Located in Blue Ash, this college of the University of Cincinnati provides a variety of programs to about 5,000 students, including an Associate of Applied Science program in dental hygiene technology. The program requires 74 credit hours of study and takes two years to complete. Courses include pharmacology for dental hygiene, pain control, special needs patients and other topics. The program's curriculum also includes several clinical practicums.
Youngstown State University
