Southwestern College offers an associate's degree program for students interested in going into the field of dental hygiene. The program faculty and administration include five individuals. Students gain hands-on experience while working under the supervision of licensed dental professionals at Southwestern's on-campus, 22-chair dental hygiene clinic.

Associate in Science in Dental Hygiene

Candidates for this program must complete 38 prerequisite units in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, communications, reading/composition, psychology and sociology. Those admitted to the program must also have CPR certification, proof of immunizations and recent physical health examination verification.

The 4-semester dental hygiene program requires completion of 55 dental hygiene units, in addition to general education requirements. During the first semester, courses include clinical concepts, infection control, dental radiography, head/neck anatomy, medical/dental emergencies and oral embryology/histology. The second semester courses introduce patient education strategies, periodontics, dental materials and pain control, in addition to the continuation of clinic work and clinical concepts.

In the summer before the third semester, students complete a summer clinic. The third semester includes courses in clinical concepts, clinic work and periodontics, community dental health, pathology, preventive dentistry and dental pharmacology. The fourth semester wraps up instruction in community dental health and clinic and also provides students a background in special needs patient care, radiographic interpretation and ethics/jurisprudence.
