List of Dental Lab Tech Schools in the U.S.
Dental laboratory technicians and technologists usually get their training at 2-year trade schools and community or vocational colleges. Dental lab technicians make dentures, crowns, bridges and other oral appliances. Sometimes they own or manage dental laboratories.
Selecting a School for Dental Laboratory Training
Basic dental lab training typically takes two or three semesters and awards a certificate. Longer programs, usually two years or five semesters, cover dental lab techniques in more depth and award the Associate of Applied Science. The Associate of Science degree program includes a year of dental lab skills courses and a year of general education, preparing the graduate to continue for a 4-year degree, if desired.
When choosing a dental lab program, students should consider their career goals, state requirements and the expectations of local employers. Certification in dental lab technology is voluntary in most states, but programs that prepare students for the National Board for Certification in Dental Lab Technology exam may lead to better job opportunities.
Dental laboratory programs should have classes that teach students how to complete the duties of a dental lab technician. These duties include creating, measuring and testing dental appliances and working with materials like metal, porcelain and composites. When choosing a school for dental lab tech training, look at the curriculum and make sure that essential dental lab technician skills are covered.
Some colleges have internship opportunities, which give students applied practice in dental lab technology; since employers may prefer dental lab technicians with hands-on experience, schools with internship opportunities may yield the best job options after graduation. Extensive labs are part of dental laboratory technology programs, but some schools offer evening or weekend options.
