The University of North Carolina's Chapel Hill campus and Fayetteville Technical Community College offer dental programs from the certificate to master's degree levels. Both schools offer dental hygiene programs and UNC Chapel Hill offers more advanced dental programs in pediatric dentistry and dental surgery.
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill's Dental Programs
Chapel Hill is among the oldest public universities in the country and is one of 16 institutions that comprise the University of North Carolina school system. The university's School of Dentistry offers a comprehensive range of certificate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees through its ten academic departments.
Certificate in Dental Hygiene
Designed to provide students with the skills to become a certified dental hygienist, this 1-year program incorporates dental hygiene theory with basic nutrition and anatomy courses. Other courses include dental pharmacology, dental ethics and clinical dental hygiene. All coursework combined equates to 64 credit hours.
Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene
In addition to a 2-year program, the school offers degree completion and transfer programs leading to a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. These programs include general education courses as well as training in a variety of dental specializations. The curriculum covers periodontics, pediatric dentistry, geriatric dentistry, hospital dentistry and community dental health. Additionally, students take courses in dental ethics, clinical dental hygiene and histology.
Master of Science in Pediatric Dentistry
This program is three years long and is offered through the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Students earn a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry as well as either a Master of Science or Master of Public Health. Courses typically incorporated in the curriculum include pediatric treatment and diagnosis, restorative dentistry, behavior management and pediatric dental emergencies. Clinical experience at university-affiliated dental clinics and local county hospitals makes up the majority of students' training. Upon completion of the program students are eligible to take the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry's certification exam.
Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education
The schools of public health, dentistry and education collaboratively offer this 24-month, interdisciplinary program. The program provides instruction in education for candidates with a solid background in dental hygiene, who would like to teach the subject. Courses include educational concepts, research methods, educational seminars, biostatistics as well as a required thesis project. In the spring of the second year, students enroll in an internship program, in which they gain teaching experience under the supervision of a professional dental hygiene instructor.
Doctor of Dental Surgery
Applicants to this program must have taken the Dental Admission Test and must hold at least a bachelor's degree. While the degree need not be directly related to dentistry, students are required to complete courses in biochemistry, English, biology and organic chemistry prior to enrollment.
The Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program can be finished in four years. The first two years of the curriculum provide students with a comprehensive medical education, while the following two engage students in extensive clinical experience. Graduates of this program are eligible to take state and national licensing board exams to practice as a dentist.
