Dental Schools in Washington State with Program Overviews

Washington Dental School
Dentists must be licensed to practice in Washington. The Dental Assurance Quality Commission is responsible for licensing dentists in the state. To earn licensure, an individual must graduate from a dental school approved by the commission, pass parts I and II of the National Board Dental Examination and pass a clinical examination. The University of Washington offers dental programs that are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
University of Washington - Seattle Campus
The University of Washington's School of Dentistry is located on the university's campus in Seattle. The university enrolls about 42,000 students.
The school offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Admission to this 4-year program requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Students in this program complete lab work, research, coursework and clinical experiences. Classes in the program cover topics like dental anatomy, dental materials, general pharmacology, endodontics, pediatric dentistry and oral surgery. The school also offers an international DDS program to graduates of foreign dental programs.
Students may also choose to attend the school's Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) Doctor of Dental Surgery program, which is designed to prepare students to practice in rural and underserved areas. This program, which requires four years of study, is offered in through a partnership established with Eastern Washington University, Washington State University and the University of Washington School of Medicine WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho). Some coursework in this program is taken in conjunction with dental hygiene and medical students.
The school also offers a combined Doctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Philosophy in Oral Biology program that is designed to prepare students for careers in academia. This dual degree program takes seven years to complete. Classes in this program include biostatistics in dentistry, advanced oral microbiology and molecular biology.
Postdoctoral residency and residency training programs are also available. Postdoctoral programs focus on research. Residency training programs are available in fields like oral and maxillofacial radiology and pediatric dentistry.
The school also offers several Master of Science in Dentistry and post-graduate certificate programs. Areas of study available in these programs include periodontics, pediatric dentistry and endodontics. These programs are available to graduates of an accredited dental school.
