Detroit Public School District Adult Education Programs

The Detroit Public School District offers extensive adult education services and programs. Stressing lifelong learning, workforce readiness and literacy, the learner-centered adult education courses help adults function better in their communities. Adult education courses are offered at ten Detroit sites, including Detroit Public School District high schools, community centers and a rescue center for the homeless.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Programs

ABE programs provide the essential skills required to begin studying to pass the GED or acquire meaningful job skills. Literacy and numeracy abilities are stressed using materials and methods appropriate for adult students.

High School Completion Programs

The downtown Detroit campus of the Wayne County Community College District offers several certificate and associate degree programs designed with the needs of working adult students in mind. Near Detroit's financial district, the downtown campus serves a diverse student body of approximately 20,000 students that come from over 60 countries. Business Information Technology Programs

Certificate and associate degree programs for adult students in business information technology include general education foundation courses and occupationally specific courses. Areas of occupational focus include desktop publishing, Web design, marketing and e-commerce.

Electronics Engineering Technology Program

This Associate of Applied Science degree program prepares graduates for careers in several electronic media industries, including satellite, Internet and broadcasting. In addition to technical skills and knowledge, adult students acquire an understanding of economic and cultural impact of electronic media technologies.

Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program

This program prepares graduates for careers as OTAs in schools, hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, serving clients with physical and emotional disabilities. To enter the 5-semester program, adult applicants must pass prerequisite courses in anatomy and physiology, psychology and fundamentals of occupational therapy.

Mental Health Programs

The certificate and associate degree programs in mental health prepare adults for a variety of human services careers. Students choose from concentrations that include psychopathology, group process and rehabilitative therapies.
