Options range from non-credit classes to graduate degrees in studio arts. Some of these programs are focused specifically on photography, while others are more general art programs that include coursework or an emphasis in digital photography and imaging. Anne Arundel Community College
Arnold's Anne Arundel Community College offers an associate's degree program in visual arts with a focus area in photography. Students in this program complete courses in digital photography, drawing, art history, black and white photography, photojournalism and alternative photo processes. Individuals in the program are expected to provide their own manual and digital cameras, as well as various photographic equipment and supplies. The school also has a student photography club, which can enhance the learning experience with lectures, seminars and workshops for photography students.
College of Southern Maryland
This public, regional college is located in La Plata and offers certificate and associate's degree programs with coursework in digital photography. The 27-credit certificate program provides a strong foundation in photographic methods for students who are interested in gaining entry-level employment in the field. Certificate holders may work in fine arts or commercial photography positions; this certificate may also serve as the first step to the school's associate's degree in art. The digital photography course teaches students how to use a digital camera, as well as related tools like scanners, editing software and printers. Students must have their own camera.
Students in the associate's degree program study a broad range of art topics including drawing, graphic design, painting and architecture. A number of photography courses are available within this program, including the same digital photography class found in the certificate program.
Community College of Baltimore County
Students who are interested in transferring to bachelor's degree programs in art and photography may wish to consider the associate's degree program in fine and performing arts at this 2-year Baltimore school. The school offers two courses in digital photography, as well as classes in digital imaging within the program's electives. The digital photography class covers camera operation and how to capture images, as well as editing techniques and commercial photography processes. Internship opportunities are available for students who have a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
Harford Community College
Located in Bel Air, Harford Community College offers certificate and associate's degree programs in photography. The certificate program helps students develop their personal aesthetics and gain proficiency with various types of cameras, lighting and photographic equipment. While many of the courses focus on film cameras, the curriculum also includes digital imaging, 2D design and studio lighting.
The school's associate's degree program in art with a photography track is appropriate for students who wish to transfer to bachelor's degree programs in art and photography. The studio-based curriculum provides training in both traditional and digital photography from established, professional photographers. A minimum of 64 credits is required for graduation; students who do not wish to advance to 4-year programs can find employment as photojournalists, photo lab technicians and commercial photographers.
Harford Community College offers photography facilities for students in both programs. These facilities include a 20-station darkroom, color printing lab, studios with professional lighting and a cutting-edge computer lab for digital photography and imaging.
Howard Community College
Students at Columbia's Howard Community College can find an associate's degree program in photography through the school's Arts and Humanities Division. The program is designed to prepare students to transfer to 4-year programs and to develop strong portfolios of photographic work. In addition to general education courses in composition, social sciences and mathematics, students in this program complete courses in photography history, darkroom techniques, studio lighting and photojournalism. Students are required to take an introductory course in digital photography and may choose an advanced course as an elective.
A number of undergraduate program options are available for students interested in digital photography at Rockville's Montgomery College. The school's associate's degree program in photography helps students gain an understanding of the basic technical aspects of the field, including lighting and digital imagining technology. Students learn about digital photography as well as traditional film and print processes.
The school also offers certificate programs in electronic photography; photographic techniques; photography master; and portrait, fashion and photojournalism. The programs range from 13 to 32 credits in length, and all require coursework in digital photography. These programs prepare individuals for careers in photography and enhance existing photographic skills.
Prince George's Community College
Prince George's Community College is located in Largo and offers more than 200 programs of study, including an associate's degree program in general studies with a concentration in art. The program introduces students to an extensive range of art topics, including design, drawing, painting and color theory, and it prepares them to transfer to bachelor's degree programs in fine or digital arts. Several photography electives are available, including classes in digital photography and digital imaging. Students how to use the camera, scanning equipment, edit images and produce prints.
Located in Salisbury, this 4-year, public university allows students to choose between a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art with a focus in photography. Both programs provide training in digital photography; the BFA program, however, requires students to gain intensive studio experience across all of these disciplines. The BA program also requires students to complete coursework in a foreign language. A 5-course minor in art, which offers opportunities to take elective courses in digital photography, is also available.
The Art Department, which currently enrolls about 300 students, boasts facilities including the Integrated Media Center. This facility provides computer and printing labs for students completing coursework in digital photography. Incoming freshmen are urged to live on campus in the Art Living Learning Community with other art students; the building contains classroom and studio space for student use.
This 4-year university located in Towson offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in art through its College of Fine Arts and Communication. Bachelor of Science (BS), BA and BFA programs are all available in art and design and offer photo imaging concentrations. The programs encourage new and innovative artistic techniques while providing a background art history and traditional methods. Students learn about composition, light and color as they relate to photographs. Internship opportunities are available through these programs.
The 60-credit Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program is meant for students who wish to work as professional artists or instructors at the college level. The program may be pursued full-time or part-time and includes coursework in digital photography and photo imaging concepts. In addition to developing advanced technical skills, students must demonstrate proficiency in research and writing.
University of Maryland - Baltimore County
This Baltimore-based university is another option for students who wish to earn a bachelor's degree with coursework in digital photography. The school's BA and BFA programs both cover a broad range of visual arts topics and offer concentrations in photography. The BFA differs from BA in that it provides more in-depth, intensive study of visual art.
