Animal nutrition programs are often a specialty or a sub-unit in an animal science degree program. Most of these degree programs are available at the master's and doctoral degree levels. Animal nutrition encompasses a variety of topics, including growth mechanisms, nutrient metabolism, metabolic disorders, feed composition, animal physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Schools with research feedlots provide opportunities for the care, feeding and observation of different types of animals.
Careers for students specializing in animal nutrition are available at government agricultural agencies, feed companies, universities and pharmaceutical companies. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the ability to work as a team and individually, communication skills and business knowledge are useful for careers in this field (www.bls.gov). Employment of animal scientists was expected to increase by 13% between 2008-2018, according to the BLS. As of May 2010, the median annual salary for animal scientists, including animal nutritionists, was $58,250.
