Inside Equine Studies
Equine studies concerns horse training and related breeding and business matters. Associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs are available. Concentrations include equine health and rehabilitation, horsemanship, horse management, equine nutrition and business management. Undergraduate and graduate certificates are available and learners can pursue them while earning a bachelor's degree. Courses cover topics in equine care and reproduction, horse anatomy and physiology, basic chemistry, animal biology, marketing, accounting and computing.
Graduates should be comfortable around horses, interested in caring for them and have some leadership and business skills. Through internships and practicums, which include clinics and horse shows, they gain hands-on experience in the equine business. This can lead to careers in veterinary medicine, hoof care, equine training, grooming and horse facility operations.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that between 2008 and 2018 the demand for veterinarians will increase by 33% (www.bls.gov). For animal breeders the BLS expected a six percent increase, for animal trainers a 20% increase and for animal care and service workers, including groomers, a 21% increase. As of May 2010, the median annual salary for animal trainers was $26,580, for animal breeders it was $31,340 and for veterinarians it was $82,040.
