Doctors, surgeons and medical research specialists obtain extensive training in cellular biology and the anatomical sciences. Nurses and other healthcare providers can also study these topics but usually to a much lesser extent. Degree programs that provide education in anatomical sciences and cellular biology also teach aspiring medical professionals decision-making skills.

Curricula in these fields generally include courses in molecular genetics, microscopic anatomy, statistics, biotechnology, gross anatomy and molecular cell biology. At the undergraduate level, many applied and theoretical health programs include a basic introduction to human anatomy. Earning a bachelor's degree in cellular biology could qualify students for jobs as lab technicians, field biologists or medical technologists, to name a few. Anatomical sciences and advanced cellular biology programs are usually offered at the graduate level. In a master's or doctoral program, students have the opportunity to engage in coursework and research directly related to their specific interests, such as neurobiology, developmental biology or anatomical sciences.

With a master's degree, graduates could work in academia or applied laboratory science, though some programs are intended to prepare them for doctoral studies. Aspiring biotechnologists, professors or research scientists generally need to earn a doctoral degree. To practice as a physician, students can find dual Ph.D./M.D. programs that combine cellular biology and anatomical science studies with medical training. Internship and residency programs are also required as well as a physician's license through the state.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), many occupations in the cellular biology and anatomical sciences fields were expected to experience considerable growth. For example, biological scientists were projected to see an increase of 21% in jobs from 2008-2018, while medical scientists could experience as much as a 40% job growth during that period. Demand for doctors and surgeons was expected to increase 22%, primarily to handle the growing elderly population. College-level teaching and clinical lab technology jobs weren't expected to see the same level of growth, but the BLS still projected a faster-than-average growth rate at 15% and 14%, respectively.
