Endocrinology

Endocrinology is a medical specialty that focuses on the hormone-producing glands that make up the endocrine system, such as the thyroid, hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal and reproductive glands. Read on to learn more about the field of endocrinology.

Inside Endocrinology

The endocrine system consists of numerous glands that produce hormones and control bodily functions, such as sexual development, reproduction, growth and metabolism. Endocrinologists are medical professionals that study the endocrine system to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances as well as other conditions affecting these glands. They may specialize in a specific disease, such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism or reproductive disorders.

Training to become an endocrinologist requires more than ten years of study, including four years of medical school followed by internships and residencies. There is no undergraduate degree program specific to the field, but students can study a bachelor's degree program in biology or biochemistry to qualify for graduate programs. Graduate programs in endocrinology, which combine research and clinical training, can be found at the master's and doctoral levels. Common curriculum includes endocrine physiology, neuroendocrinology and pediatric endocrinology.

An endocrinology graduate degree program prepares students to become practitioners and researchers within the field. A medical degree is required for licensure as an endocrinologist, among other qualifications that vary according to state. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in May of 2010 that the middle half of medical scientists (which includes endocrinologists) had annual earnings between $53,860-$105,530 (www.bls.gov).
