Generally, however, the comparative study of languages isn't offered as a separate degree program, but rather as a course within a full program, such as an ESL (English as a second language) program. In addition, computer science departments include courses in comparative languages for computers - these look at the implementation and design of modern computer languages and how they've affected programming methodology and practice.
Most programs that focus on comparative language studies attract students who wish to acquire the specialized skills required to become fluent in a number of languages. Curricula include the intensive study of language structures, and in some cases, they discuss the prominent works of literature in their native dialects. Electives for these programs may include the history of languages and coursework in the social sciences. Students can typically expect to be fluent in at least a primary language with competence in multiple others.
Careers for those interested in comparative language studies and services cover a broad range of fields within government, business and education. Those working for government agencies and business firms can expect great variance in terms of job outlook and salary, as the location, position and years of work experience all weigh against salary options. However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median salary of postsecondary foreign language educators was $59,080 in May 2010 from a middle 80% range of $33,780-$110,840 (www.bls.gov).
