Inside Cosmetology, Hair and Nail Instruction
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), personal appearance services, which deal primarily with improving a person's appearance, is a large industry, and professionals in this field are in relatively high demand (www.bls.gov). Since barbers and cosmetologists must be licensed by the state in which they work, they must undergo formal training at a professional school, reported the BLS. Additionally, before enrolling in a cosmetology instructor program, an applicant must be a licensed cosmetologist. Cosmetology instructors learn how to teach students to perform facials and manicures and style hair, along with other cosmetology tasks.
An instructor certificate program is made up of courses and a clinical experience, which involves teaching, clinical supervision and observation. The length of the program ranges from 500-750 hours, depending on the state. Completion of the instructor program and passing practical and written exams are the requirements to earn an instructor license.
Licensed instructors may find work as a cosmetology instructor working in spas and salons, perhaps as an owner, or on cruise ships. They may also take jobs as a chemical technician, photo stylist, state board examiner or product educator. Another option is to take an associate's degree in cosmetology instruction rather than the certificate program.
Another option is to become a nail technician instructor. Nail technicians are trained via a certificate program. They take courses in safety, sanitary procedures, salon management, legal issues, diseases, tools, massage, artificial nails, how to give pedicures and nail technology chemistry. After completing the program, nail technicians are eligible for licensure.
A licensed nail technician with experience may take a certificate program to become a nail technician instructor. A certificate program covers topics in student evaluation methods, course development and teaching methods. Students complete a practical experience. Licensure requirements vary depending on the state, but may include practical and written exams.
The BLS reported that between 2008 and 2018 employment of professionals in the cosmetology industry was predicted to increase by 20%. Typically, cosmetologists work in well-lit surroundings that are clean and ventilated, such as a beauty salon or a spa.
