Inside Health Teacher Education
Health teachers instruct students of all ages on how to adopt healthy and safe habits. There are many education and career paths open for those interested in becoming health teachers, and positions for health teachers are available at nearly every level of education.
Individuals interested in becoming health teachers can earn a bachelor's degree in health education, health and physical education, or health science; master's degree programs are also available. Programs that combine health education with physical education include courses in kinesiology, exercise physiology and nutrition along with health courses in disease prevention, human sexuality and drug education. Degree programs focused solely on health teacher education may include additional courses in public health and school health program coordination.
In most states, prospective teachers must take teaching preparation courses, such as learning and instruction, multicultural education, classroom curriculum management and assessment, education psychology and education technology. In addition, a student-teaching practicum is often required. Read on to learn about some of the training programs available in this field.
