Inside Psychology Teacher Education

Many U.S. schools offer a psychology major with teacher certification as part of the curriculum. Coursework in psychology may include psychological statistics, psychometrics, developmental psychology and social psychology, along with educational courses in classroom management, motivating students, student learning evaluation and students teaching experience.

To teach psychology in middle (4-8) or high school (8-12), one must obtain a license. Actual requirements depend on the state. Generally, one obtains certification to teach social studies or social science. Students would major in psychology, as well as taking courses in history, economics, political science and sociology. Students are qualified to teach psychology and social studies or social sciences. Although some states may offer certification in psychology, certification in social studies is more useful since it allows the teacher to instruct in more than one subject area. Students may also earn a Master of Education with teacher certification to teach middle or high school psychology, but must have an undergraduate major in psychology.

Individuals wishing to teach psychology at the collegiate level must earn at least a master's degree in psychology, which may qualify them to teach at community colleges. A Ph.D. in psychology allows the graduate to teach and conduct research at the university level.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that between 2008 and 2018 the employment demand for high school teachers should increase by 13% and by 15% for university professors (www.bls.gov). As of May 2010, the median annual salary for high school teachers was $53,230; and postsecondary psychology professors, $67,330.
