Students conduct advanced research in laser optics and explore spectroscopy, quantum mechanics, ultra-intense lasers and laser interaction.
Graduates of these programs can become laser and electro-optic technicians, who test, install, calibrate, maintain and repair medical instruments, including lasers and microscopes. Engineering technician employment was projected to increase by five percent in the same decade. As of May 2010, the median annual salary for engineering technicians was $58,020, according to the BLS. The salary of laser technicians can vary by industry. For example, PayScale.com reported in February 2012 that most ophthalmic laser technicians earned from $33,534 to $131,566 per year.
