Naval architecture and marine engineering is a specialized field of engineering offered at only about 15 schools in the United States. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs include courses in math, physical science, ship design, hydraulics, hydrodynamics, propulsion and thermodynamics. Many programs offer internships for students to gain experience before graduating.
Naval architects and marine engineers are required to earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree from school accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Professional engineers must be licensed in their states; licensure requires four years of work experience and a passing score on a written exam. Graduates work in shipbuilding and design, marine safety, offshore drilling, technical consulting and marine systems engineering.
Students entering this field should be creative and able to work in teams. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that job prospects in naval architecture and marine engineering would be good between 2008 and 2018 due to the low number of people choosing careers in this field. According to the BLS, marine engineers and naval architects earned an average salary of $87,770 in 2010 (www.bls.gov).
