French Studies

If you enjoy French cinema, French cuisine or the French language, pursuing a degree in French studies could be for you. In this interdisciplinary program, you'll learn to speak French and gain knowledge about France and other Francophone cultures.

Inside French Studies

Through a program in French studies, students explore the French language and the 33 Francophone countries around the world. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs are available. Topics include French literature, film, history, arts and society. Learners read books and poetry by French authors, such as Gustave Flaubert and Albert Camus, write in French, study grammar and communicate with fellow students and native French speakers.

An important goal in French studies is fluency in the French language, customs and lifestyles that set Francophone societies apart. France and Haiti, along with the province of Quebec, share many cultural and linguistic roots, and they have developed unique national identities that French studies students can explore. As a result, enrollees are encouraged to participate in study abroad programs. They live in a country that speaks the targeted language, experiencing the culture while fine-tuning their linguistic skills.

Many career opportunities are available to individuals who know a second language. Entry-level jobs for bachelor's degree holders could include working as an interpreter, translator, technical writer or international tour guide. Graduate-level studies can prepare individuals for careers in university teaching, intelligence, tourism, business, translating or interpreting. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) projected that between 2008 and 2018 the demand for interpreters and translators was project to increase by 22%. For travel agents, demand was anticipated to decline by one percent and increase by nine percent for high school teachers. As of May 2010, the median annual salary for tour guides was $23,290; travel agents, $31,870; interpreters and translators, $43,300; anthropological linguists, $54,230; and foreign language professors, $59,080.
