Cabinetmaking
Cabinetmaking is the craft of constructing storage space, primarily for kitchens and bathrooms. Community and technical colleges offer certificate and associate degree programs for people who want to learn the craft.
Inside Cabinetmaking
Cabinetmakers build storage enclosures for kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and living rooms. They may make these enclosures from wood, wood composites or metal and may build the cabinets to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.
Building cabinetry requires the maker to have manual dexterity and enough mathematical ability to draft, measure and cut with precision. Knowledge of material specifications, fastener types and joining techniques is also required. Cabinetmakers also need to know how to apply finishes and safely operate a wide assortment of hand and power tools.
Would-be cabinetmakers have some options if they want to formally learn the craft. Community and technical colleges offer diploma, certificate and associate degree programs. Diploma and certificate programs have courses in woodworking basics and computer-aided design (CAD). Associate degree programs also include a general education component. Both may offer internship opportunities and facilitate job searches. Community college staff may even help an entrepreneurial cabinetmaker establish a business.
Some aspiring cabinetmakers may choose an apprenticeship, which may be offered by a community or technical school, often in association with a labor union. These programs combine classroom time with on-the-job training. Apprentices work under the guidance of experienced cabinetmakers, where they learn industry standards, woodworking techniques and safe use of power equipment. These programs typically take 3-4 years.
