Providing business, homes, and schools with cooling, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration (HVACR), maintenance workers help provide comfort. Many professionals in the field rely on HVACR technicians and would not be able to work otherwise. Scientists, hospitals, and teachers would be at a loss if it weren't for climate-control and refrigeration. From installing new heaters and coolers to disposing of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), technicians in the field are important in making sure that temperature control is provided without hurting the environment. Technicians are also called in to fix CFC leaks, program control systems and inspect systems for maintenance and safety.

Skilled HVACR technicians can look forward to becoming service managers, supervisors, and contractors and earning higher wages. Many mechanics and installers train on the job. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) states that the increasing sophistication of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems, cause many employers to prefer hiring workers with technical school or apprenticeship training.
